What to Wear Fishing with Your Boyfriend [Cold & Hot Weather]

Spending the day fishing with your boyfriend is a great opportunity to make memories doing something that he (or both of you!) loves. Lots of gals wonder what to wear for a fishing trip, because they want to look cute while still dressing practically for the occasion.

What to wear when fishing with your boyfriend depends on the weather. In the summer, lightweight clothing is essential, but you also need protection from the sun. If it’s cold outside, wear plenty of layers to keep warm. You should also prepare for temperature changes and bring the right accessories.

What to Wear Fishing in Warm Weather

Even during the summer months, it’s a good idea to use some layers to help keep you cool and offer some sun protection. The good news is that there are plenty of options of things to wear that are cute, comfortable, and practical for a day on the water.

Tops for Fishing with Your Boyfriend

A thin t-shirt is a good choice for your base layer. There are plenty of shirts out there made specifically for outdoor activities, so look for one that’s made with a polyester blend and has moisture-wicking capabilities. There are many options like tops with UV protection, water repellent materials, and even fabrics that help prevent body odor. Take a look at what’s available so you can make the best choice for you.

Your next layer should be another thin top, like a hiking or fishing shirt. These are button down shirts that normally have a collar and are made with materials that protect you from the sun, wind, and have stay-dry technology. They come in short, long, and ¾ sleeve lengths. Look for a shirt that’s made from 100% nylon and has vents built-in to help keep you cool.

I think it’s best to wear a long sleeve or ¾ convertible sleeve because the wind can get chilly when you’re on the water, especially if you’re on a boat. You may even want to bring a lightweight windbreaker jacket. Being cold on a boat is miserable, so you don’t want to risk ruining your fun by not being prepared for changes in temperature.

It’s a good idea to choose a light-colored top (think pastels) to help you blend in with your surroundings from the fish’s perspective. Fish can see very well, and they can see colors, so if you’re wearing a neon pink top, it might deter the big one from swimming around your boat. Expert anglers recommend wearing light blues, grays, and soft, neutral greens.

Many girls ask whether they should wear a bathing suit to go fishing. The general recommendation is that it’s never a bad idea to wear or bring a swimsuit when you’re going out on the water. Even if you don’t dive in, there’s a good chance you’ll get wet. Plus, if your boyfriend wants to get playful and throw you in the water, it’s best to be prepared.

Bottoms for Fishing with Your Boyfriend

For your pants or shorts, you should follow the same advice as for the shirt. Wear lightweight materials and fabrics that are made to be water resistant. Those with SPF or UV-protection are even better.

If you want to look like you’re a real outdoorswoman, you may even want to consider some convertible zip-off pants. These quick-drying, lightweight pants have zippers around the leg so that you can remove the bottom half to turn them into shorts. They’re ideal if you’re leaving in the early morning or returning in the evening once the sun is going down. The temperature can change drastically on the water, so these pants can help you be prepared for any weather.

If the thought of zipping off your pant leg is a little too much for you, another option is this Columbia convertible pant. They still have zippers on each leg, but they’re a little more subtle. Plus, there’s a leg hem that cinches up so you can wear them as capri pants if you don’t want to go for shorts.

Chances are, you have some bottoms in your closet that are suitable for fishing, but it depends on how prepared you want to be. Either way, choose neutral or light colors (just like with the top), and avoid heavy fabrics like denim that will take way too long to dry. Don’t wear your favorite capris, because there’s always the chance of a stray hook snagging your clothes or getting them messy from the fish and bait.

What to Wear Fishing in Cool Weather

When the weather isn’t so hot out, dressing for a fishing trip can become a challenge. However, as long as you take the time to prepare, you’ll be able to look cute, stay warm, and have a great day fishing with your boyfriend.

Just like in summer, layering is key during the cool and cold months. It’s even more essential in winter. It’s a good idea to start with a thin base layer then add heavier layers as needed, depending on the weather. The idea here is to have versatility. So, if it starts to warm up in the afternoon, you’ll be able to remove some outer layers for your comfort.

You’ll need a heavier outer layer, like a water-resistant, insulated jacket with a hood. If it’s really cold, you should bring a hat that covers your ears and a scarf. You may even want to invest in some hand warmers or something to supplement your insulation.

Warm socks are important if you’re fishing in the cold, along with some water resistant footwear. If you can keep your feet and head warm, you’re much less likely to catch a chill and be miserable while you’re on the water.

For pants, you can wear the same fishing pants that we recommended for summer as long as you have warm base layers underneath. Some insulated leggings or long underwear may be necessary if it’s going to be a very cold or windy day.

Accessories and Other Tips for Fishing with Your Boyfriend

Once you’ve figured out your base outfit, you’ll need to think about a few accessories to prepare for your fishing trip. These items aren’t just for looks or style; they’re important for your comfort while you’re on the water.

Sunglasses for Fishing

A good pair of polarized sunglasses will make a huge difference while you’re fishing. Not only do they protect your eyes from the sun’s harmful rays, but they will help combat the glare on the water and make it easier for you to see. I love these Maui Jim sunglasses (super cute!), but you can find something in every price range and style.

Whatever you choose, you should also consider a neck strap to make sure that your sunglasses don’t go overboard when you’re reeling in the big one.

Cute Women’s Fishing Hat

A hat is another essential for your fishing trip with your significant other. While the right fishing hat will be an adorable accessory for your outfit, it also serves a purpose while you’re out on the boat.

No matter the season, a hat is necessary to protect your head, face, and neck from the sun. When it’s cold outside, your hat will provide extra insulation for your head. Remember, the water reflects and intensifies the sun’s rays onto your upper body. You’ll want to protect as much as you can.

A hat with a wide brim will provide the most sun protection. There are tons of options for these hats, but I like the ones that have vents for airflow and a hole for your ponytail to fit through it (like this one).

In the winter, you can throw on an insulated beanie or skull cap underneath your fishing hat to get some added warmth with the same protection for your face and neck. Remember, just because it’s not hot outside doesn’t mean that the sun’s rays are any less powerful.

Shoes for Fishing

What shoes you should wear on a fishing trip with your boyfriend can be the most difficult decision of all. Typically, some cute sandals would be the go-to for any outdoor activity dealing with water. But, fishing is a little different. There are hazards on the boat, so you want to be careful about protecting your feet.

Most importantly, don’t go barefoot. It may be tempting to throw your shoes off when you’re on the boat, but trust me, it’s a bad idea. A stray hook or a spiny fish can ruin your day if you don’t have shoes on.

I recommend either a cute boat shoe, like these adorable Columbia Dorado boat shoes that are water repellent, stain resistant, and have a grippy bottom, or some cute fishing boots. A lot will depend on the weather, of course, but you can normally be safe with either of these options.

The only exception would be if you’re going fly fishing or will be wading into the water. In that case, you’ll definitely need some boots. I LOVE these Salmon Sisters fishing boots from Xtrauf (available on Amazon).

Final Thoughts

Going on a fishing trip with your boyfriend can be a really fun experience for both of you. The key takeaway here is to dress for your comfort and practicality. Do a little research ahead of time to see what the conditions will be like. Check the weather forecast the night before so that you can plan your outfit accordingly.

A day on the water can be a great bonding experience. No matter what you wear, your boyfriend will be happy to spend the time with you doing something that he enjoys. Just don’t forget the sunscreen!
